Utilising the latest technology from Japanese optical equipment maker Topcon coupled with a 6.1 megapixel Nikon D70 digital camera body we now have the ability to take high definition photos of the back of the eye. These photos are instantly available for us to view. They provide an invaluable accurate record of the health of the retina. Which means we can compare photos when you come in for your regular comprehensive eye exmainations and see if any changes have occured.
Certain eye diseases cause visible changes on the retina. The disease diabetes can subtly affect the very fine blood vessels in the retina and this can lead to diabetic retinopathy. With a digital photo we can monitor any small changes that may be occuring. Glaucoma can affect the eye's optic nerve head and changes here can be seen and more easily documented with a digital photo.
The Zeiss Matrix visual field analyzer lets us check for subtle changes that can affect the field of vision - these are often associated with the eye disease glaucoma. With this automated machine we can monitor changes in people's visual fields who have progressive glaucoma and we can even detect some neurological conditions that affect the eyes and vision. This is a vital piece of equipment for checking the health of your eyes.
Internal Eye Pressures are measured with either a non contact tonometer that uses a puff of air or a Kowa tonometer which uses a blue light that gently touches the front of the eye. Higher eye pressures can be an indicator of glaucoma. Our Nidek tonometer also has a pachymeter which lets us measure the front thickness of the cornea to determine if this is adversly contributing to the intraocular eye pressure measurement.
