Computer Vision Syndrome is a collection of symptoms of vision problems related to near work that may be caused or aggravated by regular computer use, about 75% of computer users have it. Computers can stress the eyes causing headaches, blurred vision and eye fatigue.
Causes The causes of Computer Vision Syndrome are a combination of individual visual problems, poor workplace conditions and improper work habits. Fixating the eyes for extended periods of time on the computer screen or poor lighting conditions that cast shadow across your work can cause eyestrain. Inherent problems such as a prescription and dry eyes are among the leading causes of Computer Vision Syndrome.
Symptoms Symptoms of Computer Vision Syndrome include periodic blurred near vision, double vision, headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain, sensitivity to light, eyestrain and irritated eyes, contact lens discomfort and change in colour perception. Any combination of these symptoms may be present and should not be taken lightly.
Solutions The following steps can be taken to reduce eyestrain from computer use:
- Make sure the computer screen is at least 45 to 65 cm away from your eyes.
- Arrange the monitor so that the top line of on-screen text is at eye level. Placing a monitor too high strains the eyes, causing them to dry out.
- Arrange lighting to minimize glare and reflections.
- Keep the computer screen clean and dust-free to minimize glare.
- Take frequent vision breaks to stretch your body and rest your eyes.
- Remember to blink often to keep your eyes moist.
- Place reference material alongside and as close to the computer screen as possible to avoid frequent head and eye movements and focussing changes.
- Get your eyes examined every year by your optometrist to see if you need corrective computer eyewear
